The dust stamps the earthy mark in that which we observe. The landscape that educated us does not disappear when we turn our backs to it: it persists in every particle of earth and, when we become aware of its presence, it goes back to sparkle in the horizon. To capture this landscape the photographer could not erase the dust that constitutes its trace. He could not isolate developed film from this imperfections; cover the dots that appear in the copies without losing the most important. This particle of earth in the negative, attached to it in the washing, is not an excrescence nor an accident, but rather an element that defines the image, that extracts it from the series of circulating images and inscribes, through its minuscule interference, its most precious sense.
